Generic Name: Omeprazole
Omeprazole is used to treat peptic ulcer, reflux, dyspepsia, oesophagitis, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Omeprazole is also used to support the healing of damage to your esophagus. These conditions are all caused by excess stomach acid. Omeprazole works by decreasing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Omeprazole may sometimes also be given in combination with antibiotics to treat gastric ulcer caused by infection with helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). The antibiotics used for this are usually clarithromycin and amoxicillin.
Omeprazole is generally well tolerated but the side effects reported are rashes, headache, nausea, diarrhoea, and constipation.
Heartburn is sometimes mistaken to be the first symptoms of a heart attack. Always seek emergency medical attention if you have chest pain or heavy feeling, sweating, dizziness, nausea, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, or vomiting and a general ill feeling.
Omeprazole is not to be used for instant relief of heartburn symptoms.
